Meet Joanna

Joanna Blackman, Intern in Peru

Meet Joanna Blackman from Ellicott City, Maryland! This Summer, Joanna will be joining our Internship in Peru program! We can’t wait to welcome her in the Sacred Valley of the Incas! Get to know her in this interview!

Tell us more about you:

I am a recent high school graduate; and, I will be attending the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor this fall to study Political Science and Economics! I love using math as a means of explaining societal trends; so, I hope to employ my skills in economics to fight political injustices, either through non-profit work or law. As such, I am naturally highly passionate about service. I can’t wait to begin interning in Peru this summer!

What is your main motivation for participating in the program?

Last summer, I studied in Spain through an exchange program. Meeting people from over 20 countries opened my eyes to the variety of cultures around the world. I hope to become more culturally aware while serving the local community in Cusco and mastering my Spanish skills.

Tell us about some of the places/things on your bucket list?

I want to visit at least 6 continents!

What are your future career goals?

I hope to have a career in Immigration law or non-profit work so that I can use my passion for correcting systematic injustice as I serve those facing injustices in the US while also using my Spanish skills in daily life.

What motivated you to choose Peru?

I chose Peru to explore a culture entirely new to me that would allow me to speak Spanish daily.
